Branden Temple
Q.so Branden howd you get into racing
A.Well i grew up around racing my dad owned a grand national car back in the early 80's and once i was born in 87 from what i heard from my dad one of the first things he gave me was a die cast car and i was sitting in my high chair rolling it back and forth makin engine noises
and my first race i attended was the BGN race at richmond in 93
and since then i had been building race tracks in the sand at the beachA.Why legendsQ.well south hampton being just 18 miles down the road from here and i have always been a pavement kinda guy growing up there and seeing legends i just figured it would be a good way to break into the sport i was past the go kart age and legends where the next step past that and there have been alot of good drivers come out of the series and i figured it would teach me alot i mean it took me awhile to catch on having no racing expierance and i had alot of tuff times but once i caught on it was a dream come true Q.Who is your racing hero A.
hmm i can name alot but i couldn't name for a reasoni mean of course Earnhardt
owner Junie dunleavy
harry gant
: and all the old timers before the 70's
i really cant name one
: i respect everybody who made racing what it is today
those are my heros
them and the family owned teams that busted there tails to make racing what it is todayQ. Speaking of family owned team your dad owned a busch teamA.My dad had a car wax business' (its called something else i cant think of the right name for it) it was called tempo-glo they only attempted a handful of races Q.Who were the drivers A.i don't know as i told u before my dad don't talk to me about that that was a tuff time for him and now he is doing it again i have seen pictures but no names Q.Does it make you want to consider becoming an owner to be a successful car owner in the family? A.well im happy racing whatever i can race but if its a chance where i could afford a team and do better as a owner then driver maybe i would consider it but i would much reather want to drive a car but if i could ever afford to do it its not out of the questionQ.Do you have a 5 year goal?
A.well as any racer i want to make it to a top level
but i just love racing
but if i had to say 5years from now
usar,arca, trucks, busch, cup
Q. so it doesn't matter what series has long has you do wellcorrect i would love to make a living racing
but i just want to race and do well
if u do that the worlds the limit Q.Thats rightA.Thats rightQ. How realistic are you on making it to cup and suceeding we have seen guys like Ward Burton ,Ricky Craven , go in have little success and either end up in wrose rides or no rides A. well going into cup this day in time is like a crap shoot
u never know if u will make it or not u got to have the connections and/or the sponsors
and then if u make it u don't know what type equipment u will be in i hope i make it and i think have enough talent to make it but u cant start dreaming u got to sit here and think about your next race on the short tracks and if u perform good enough your time will come Q.If you went on a team like the 49 which is in a sate the 32 was in could you pull of victories? A.well yeah i could and many other drivers could also it all starts up front in the organization i mean the team shows what it takes at times they just got to get consistant and trying get some bigger sponsors come in remember at the end up last year bliss was showing some signs in that car now they are same old same old if they can do that week end and week out they will be fineQ.Robby Gordon recently got outside pole for a cup race and best finish this year is a 10th a dover is what he doing the best thing for his career being a car owner/driverA.
well Robby is a great driver
but he isn't a driver that a car owner would fall in love with i dont want to say it was his best move but really probably his smartest i mean the team shows signs of gettin better if they can get things clickin they would be alright Q.Kenny Wallace and the 78 team came out of nowhere last year and for a while were pulling top 10 starts what lies for this teamA.well one thing the team needs to do is move to charlotte.they are not going to be anything great anytime soon but if they get the resources they might be alright Q.They do use Hms engines A. if they get the resources and the equipment and get consistant they could be top 35 easy yes its HMS but its not the good stuff and it don't matter what motor you got if u don't have a top of the line chassis Q.So if they either built better chassis or got Hms ones they'd stand a chance?A. no they wouldn't i mean maybe a little better but they would have to do there own in house chassis and motors when u are getting handme downs there is no way u are getting the same thing they are getting Q.Why is hms so dominate A. equipment chemisty other then that i have no idea Q.
Gibbs seems very strong in the cot
hms got into big trouble at the track recently
with the 24 and 48 being parked
and the 5 and 25 didn't qualify well
Stewart got 5th will this be their race
A. hmm
i will probably be wrong but i expect it to be a surprise this weekend
maybe a JGR car but not a HMS car i expect it to be a head turner a 1st time winner or somebody that hasn't won this year Q. No car has won at sonoma outside the top 13 and no hms car is in the top 25A.History is historyQ.Could it change A. could change anyday thats why its historyQ.Getting back to your career what tracks do you run on or have ran on A. Southampton Motor Speedway, Southside Speedway, South Boston Speedway, Langley Speedway, East Carolina Speedway, Southern National Raceway Park, Coastal Plains Raceway, Wake County Speedway, Florence Motor Speedway, Caraway Speedway, Lake Erie Speedway, Lanier National Speedway and Orlando Speedworld and orange county speedway Q.Which one is your favorite A. Coastal Plains Raceway Q.What do you like about itA.
tri-oval not another thing around here alike it
its a drivers track
but it also requires a motor and a good handling car
and not to little of banking but not to much enough where u got to stay up on the but enough to catch a misteak wheel
Q.Short track racing might be in trouble how do you feel about the state of short track racing A. well whats killin the short tracks right now is just the money that u got to put into this day in time and really almost every local team out there is strugglin to find even average to below average sponsors its really sad the only real way to help it is tracks enforce rules tighter and have no grey areas and just try to keep the cost down and nascar really needs to go out and support there local tracks i mean im not going to name the track or any numbers but it closed up a few years ago and from what the owner told me nascar pretty much raped them
if they can get the cost down there would be new people gettin cars and racing that would help the car count and that would in return help the amount of spectators
its jsut so tuff to compete
Q.Do you believe this might be preventing the next Kevin Harvicks or Matt Kenseths?
A. well no i mean there will be more people coming off the short tracks u just got to be in the right situation but if u dont have cars out on the track to race u wont get any people to watch and by controlin the cost of racing and keepin it reasonable would get new faces and your average joe that wasnt born into a wealthy family out there it all starts with cost in my opinion from what i can tell atleast in this area we arent gettin the new faces every year
i mean we get a few but we lose more then we get
and car counts just keep fallin and also by controlin cost and makin the rules tighter would also make better racing and bring more fans to the tracks
Q. Some say expenses is why we see more rich white familes instead of blacks and latinos true?
A.
its just not many african american or latino familys interested in racing
atleast circle track racing i mean cost keeps all people out it doesnt matter color i mean its ten times easier to pick up a football or baseball at a young age
Q. Last Question what track will you be visiting for your next race
A.
as long as i get my motors back i should be at Wake County Speedway friday
and that one of my better tracks i seem to slide the nose there everytime im there but im still fast but as long as everything goes as expected it should be a easy top 3
Q.Thank you for the interview Brandon and goodluck on the track
A. thanks no problem
